The sun’s out, the wildflowers are blooming, and your winter jumpers are safely stored away. It’s summer, ladies and gentlemen! At Good Fabric, that can only mean one thing for our wardrobes – a new season of sundresses.
Flirty, floaty, and occasionally floral, nothing beats the ease of a sundress when getting ready in the morning. Traditionally sleeveless and without covering the neck, these little numbers leave just enough skin on show to flaunt your summer tan, too. What could be better?
As fans of the humble sundress in all its forms, the Good Fabric team has countless sundress sewing patterns on hand for when the weather warms up. We’ve also tried lots of different eco-friendly fabrics for our dresses, from calm and collected Cotton and Linen for casual chic, to the silkier handles of Viscose, Ecovero, and Tencel.
As for prints, florals and sundresses are like strawberries and champagne; they have us dreaming of warm, summer days. But you can’t go wrong with a simple colour for a more versatile look, too. A hot pink slip dress? Yes, please.
Without any more chit-chat on sustainable fabric choices (we could go on all day), here are the best sundress sewing patterns from our favourite indie designers.

A beautiful sundress inspired by vintage British fashion, the Kew Dress is a versatile sewing pattern for all your summer outings. Choose from the staple sundress shoulder straps, or shake things up with an off-shoulder look or ruched sleeves.
Pictured is our take on the Kew Dress in Red Viscose Crepe, which we think is a perfectly romantic choice for this classic style.
A contemporary choice for stylish sewists, the Paris Mini Dress sewing pattern has plenty of on-trend details.
From the fitted waist with a visible seam, to the ruched bust cups and tie-up shoulder straps, it’s a little dress with a lot to love. The ruffle and flounce at the skirt finish the look off with a little playful, flirty edge.
The Daisy Dress is as well-suited to a day at the beach as it is to an evening of al-fresco dining. With a skater-style skirt, fitted waist, bust darts, and tie-up straps, it blends girlish charm with a laid-back look for one of our favourite sundress sewing patterns.
We recommend a slightly heavier fabric for a more structured skirt, though play around to find your perfect drape.
We think the Joelle Dress can fall under different styles depending on how you sew it. Opt for a mini dress with the peekaboo cutout and a bright print for youthful playfulness. If you’re more of a boho gal, choose the maxi length, oversized bow, and earth-toned fabric for that free-spirited look.
We also recommend checking out the Joelle tutorials for lots of super helpful tips.
Looking for an elegant, easy-breezy sundress for casual countryside strolls? The Taimi Dress has you covered. A loose-fitting, sleeveless look with a gathered hem, round neckline, and maxi skirt, it’s so effortlessly cool for hot summer days.
It even has pockets (hooray!), making this sundress pattern one of our summer staples.
Searching for a super cute babydoll dress for the summer? Look no further than the Delphina Sundress sewing pattern. In a pullover style, it’s super easy to slip on after a seaside swim and the loose fit is ideal for heatwaves.
The sweet ruffles around the waist and the pleated skirt add a cutesy vibe, bringing a little shape to a simple silhouette.
Blend comfort and style in the Sauvie Dress. This is a great sundress sewing pattern for beginners, and for our more advanced sewists, you can whip it up in no time.
With a low front and back, and different options for your finishes, hem lengths, and waists (choose a loose-fit or an elasticated option), it’s a versatile choice that keeps things simple.
A smocked back, super thin shoulder straps, and a floaty skirt - it’s a sundress! This is a pretty, girly sewing pattern that makes us think of ice creams and days at the beach.
But the Poleen Dress has a little surprise in that, on the front of the pattern, the top is actually separated from the skirt, with a smocked waistband and a drawstring tie to show off your midriff.
The Paloma Dress is the epitome of easy dressing. It’s designed to be worn without a bra (the magic of a thick lining) and has no fastenings. Slip it on over your head and you’re ready to go. Did we mention it’s gorgeous, too?
An empire waist elongates the legs while the gathered neckline and cute tie-up detail add simple femininity to this beautiful sundress pattern.
This season is all about cut-outs that cinch the waist and spice up summer sundresses.
The Nellie Dress does both perfectly. From the back, the sundress has an open waist that angles down around the sides, meeting at the front to give the effect of sneak-peek cut-outs. Choose from three different necklines for a full summer wardrobe.
We love the fabric colours Tilly and the Buttons chose for their Seren Dress - just look at those summery shades. This button-down, knee-length sundress is perfect for moonlit dances or breakfast on the balcony.
It gives a little retro vibe, too, and the optional midriff cut-out and bust overlay add a little flair to your wardrobe.
The Darla Sundress pattern is so much more than just a dress. There are options for sundresses, and options for - drumroll, please… jumpsuits! The sundresses have a cute fitted bodice and can be either a mini or maxi length.
We love View B’s tie-up back closure. The jumpsuits have the same girly tops and long, flowy trousers, perfect for warm days.
A sundress doesn’t have to be frilly and fussy, as the Leighanne Dress so stunningly proves. A simple empire-waist sundress with clustered darts for a faux-tailored look, it’s giving garden party vibes and we’re here for it.
Princess seams, side slits, and double straps add tiny touches of elegance for understated beauty.
This A-line sundress sewing pattern can be made four ways, from a mini dress to a maxi and with straps or sleeves. Clever!
But what we really love about the Zero-Waste Tiered Dress is its innovative approach to pattern cutting that minimises waste. You draw your pattern pieces onto the fabric (no paper = happy sewists) and utilise your entire length for a fun pattern puzzle.
You can’t beat a slip dress - that simple but flattering silhouette creates the perfect canvas for styling. Our slip pick for the summer is the Saltwater Dress sewing pattern, which can be sewn above-the-knee for a flirtier choice or left longer with cheeky side splits.
Fabric wise, we’d recommend a lightweight Viscose or Cotton Sateen to get that subtle shine and effortless drape.
We might have saved the sweetest sundress sewing pattern for last, ladies. The Bubble Frock is a super girly sewing pattern, with a scalloped neckline and gathered, voluminous skirt making this the best party dress for the summer season.
The empire waistline emphasises that mini ballgown look, and can we just take a minute for that pink fabric? Ah-mazing!
Phew - that was a fair few sundress sewing patterns! Now there’s no excuse for an empty wardrobe this summer. One of the things we love about sundress sewing patterns is that there are so many opportunities for pattern hacks, too, with a quick length alteration or sleeve change creating a whole new look.
You will have noticed we’ve added hashtags to each sundress sewing patterns here. We do encourage all of our lovely sewists to check these out for an abundance of inspiration. Moodboard different looks with our range of sustainable fabrics, too, and shake up your sundresses with a floaty Double Gauze or laid-back Linen.
