Supplies you'll need
- 5cm wide elastic for the waistband. Refer to cutting plan by size for measurement.
- 3cm wide contrast bias binding strip to finish the inside of the waistband. Refer to cutting plan by size for measurement.
- Sizes 3XL-6XL may require an additional contrast panel added to your pocket bag pieces for extra length. This will depend on the fabric width you have chosen.

Clever zero waste Trousers Sewing Pattern by Birgitta Helmersson is designed to be both stylish and practical, and comes in 10 sizes from XS to 6XL.
The trousers have a comfy elasticated waistband, flattering front pleats for a slightly tailored feel, and a unique back leg seam that shifts position depending on the size you’re making. With side seams that sit slightly towards the front, handy in-seam pockets, and patch pockets at the back, they’re as functional as they are good-looking.
Also included is a simple hack: a relaxed skirt with patch pockets and an elasticated waist, using the same zero waste approach.
Method
This sewing pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF instruction booklet. Rather than using large paper patterns, you’ll draw your pieces directly onto fabric using easy-to-follow templates. These templates can be created yourself or printed at home. The modular layout means you can adjust length, tweak design features, and adapt the pattern to suit different fabric widths with ease.
