There’s one problem with Valentine’s Day falling in February in the UK: it’s cold. Forget that strappy black minidress or slinky red number – they won’t be making an appearance until at least April. Luckily, ladies, all is not lost. There are outfits that can be both cosy and cute at the same time, and this year it’s all about the long sleeve dresses.
Chic and with plenty of cover against the February freeze, you won’t need your partner’s coat to snuggle up this Valentine’s (although it does help). To make things even easier, we’ve compiled a collection of date-night-ready patterns so that you can sew the long-sleeve dress of your dreams. We’ve also included some snuggly sustainable fabric recommendations, too, with cosy knits and thick jerseys ready and raring to keep out the cold.

Roxanne Dress by Viki Sews
A curve-hugging dress with a sport-chic aesthetic, this is a look that oozes high-class cool. Sitting between a maxi and a midi length depending on how tall you are (and how you cut it), the Roxanne Pattern by Viki Sews is much more than a bodycon. Exposed seams running through the fabric add a contemporary feel that flatters your figure, while the elongated sleeves are finished with shaped hems and slits. A high-neck, grown-on stand collar finishes off this uber-cool pattern and adds next-level cosiness to your Valentine’s look, too.
This is a statement dress that doesn’t need a bold fabric to stand out. We recommend using a 2×1 Rib Knit for extra warmth and a little stretch. The texture also fits perfectly with the exposed seams, making for a look that even Kim K would double-take.

Olivia Wrap Dress by Named
When it comes to long sleeve dress sewing patterns, it doesn’t get much more elegant than the Olivia Wrap Dress by Named. This is a timeless look of class and femininity, and is deceptively comfy, too.
The pattern is consciously designed with ease of wear in mind, from the interfacing around the neckline to keep it perfectly in place to the hidden pockets sewn into the side seams. An elasticated waistband is a dream if you’re heading out for a three-course meal whilst the wide belt lets you show off your natural curves.
Now onto our sustainable fabric recommendation. For a dress that’s as elegant as this, do it justice with a luxurious Tencel Jersey. With a soft, silky handle and ah-mazingggg drape, it’ll add plenty of movement to your date night dress.

Estelle Dress by Sew Over It
Sewing for Valentine’s doesn’t have to be overly complicated. Even if you’re a beginner, you can sew something beautiful (and warm) for your night on the town. A pattern we love for anyone brushing up on their skills is the Estelle Dress by Sew Over It.
She’s comfy, she’s stylish, and she’ll keep you cosy on a cold February night – what more could you ask for? The length is between a midi and a maxi, and you can dress your look up or down depending on how you accessorise. You’re also in for a versatile pattern if you opt for this one. Choose from short, long, and ¾ length sleeves, and switch up the skirt from straight to wide with optional splits, which can be made higher or lower depending on how much leg you want to show – oh la la!
The Estelle Dress works in a whole range of eco-friendly fabrics, too, but for added warmth you can’t beat a humble Cotton Jersey. Browse through colours and prints to create a look that you love.
Jackie Dress by Victory Patterns
It’s a Velour moment! With a good two-way stretch and luxe finish that’s oh-so-romantic, Velour is the perfect match for the easy elegance that is the Jackie Dress by Victory Patterns. A gorgeous midi-dress that oozes confident glamour, you’ll be turning heads on your romantic date night. It’s also designed to be a quick make, which is fabulous with Valentine’s Day just around the corner.
The style features a built-up neckline that’s on the cusp of being a high-neck and incorporates lots of well-placed seams to create a gorgeous fit and divinely feminine drape. A fitted waist and long sleeves flow into a full skirt with plenty of movement, while the beautiful open-back closure and three small buttons add simple elegance for a girly finish.
Our 100% Organic Cotton Velour is the ideal warm fabric to bring the fine-dining look of the Jackie Dress to life. Do note, though, that as a really popular choice, we are occasionally out of stock of Velour. If that’s the case, sign up to our mailing list to be notified when it’s back in and ready to go.
Lotta by Tilly and the Buttons
Opt for fun and flirty this year with the Lotta by Tilly and the Buttons long sleeve dress sewing pattern. An easy-breezy design that can be taken from day to night with the click of a pair of heels, it’s a must-have for any wardrobe. The pattern is completely free from fiddly bits, too, making it a great choice for beginners.
The Lotta dress has a lovely, loose fit with a blousy top and flared skirt, pulled in at the middle with a simple elasticated waistband. Change the skirt and sleeve lengths to suit your style and pop on patch pockets if you’re a gal with lots to carry.
In terms of fabrics, this is a really versatile pattern that’ll suit both woven and knitted materials. But, as it’s Valentine’s Day, we suggest a unique, bold print from the See You at Six French Terry Collection. Their gorgeous range of high-quality knits proves that a warm look can still be glam.
