What’s the ultimate wardrobe staple in our sustainable fabric glossary? Single Cotton Jersey Fabric.
Lightweight, breathable, and able to hold its shape like a dream, it’s our go-to for chilled-out t-shirts and curve-hugging dresses. It’s less drapey than Tencel or Viscose Jersey and has less stretch, making it easier to work with and earning its place as one of our all-time favourites. You go, single cotton jersey!
Our Organic Cotton Jerseys are pre-shrunk, too, so that you can wash them with confidence without the dreaded fear of ruining your memade outfit in the wash. Pair with Tubular Rib Knit Fabric to finish your garments with a little stretch and kit your wardrobe out in ultimate laid-back looks.
If you’re starting to sew with single cotton jersey fabric and don’t know what to do with it, we’ve put together some fabulous projects to inspire you. Let’s dive in.
1. Beginner-Friendly T-Shirts
So we obviously couldn’t talk about single cotton jersey fabric without mentioning sewing t-shirts. What can we say – you just can’t beat a good, simple tee.
It’s also a great project for beginners, helping you get to grips with sewing single cotton jersey and creating a wonderful wardrobe of t-shirts at the same time, which is a definite win-win in our books.
One of our personal favourite patterns is the Alya T-Shirt by Viki Sews. A hip-length, boxy style with a crew neck, there’s an ultra-chill vibe to this no-nonsense tee. If you love a boyfriend fit, this is going to be your new wardrobe BFF thanks to the oversized sleeves and drop-shoulder, too, making for an effortlessly cool look.
2. Flattering Bodysuits
Bodysuits are back, baby! This super gorgeous style has made a fashion comeback – but did it ever really leave? Aside from the loo logistics (which we admit can be a bit troublesome) we always love a good bodysuit.
Show off your figure with the Belen Bodysuit from By Masin, a super versatile pattern with plenty of style options. Go sleeveless or opt for long sleeves, and choose for sew-in snaps or hook and eyes for the crotch fastening, or sew it completely together so that it fits like a swimsuit. We adore the low-cut back which adds an elegant, feminine touch to the design.
3. Not-So-Boring Long-Sleeve Tops
A must-have in every handmade wardrobe that makes looking good oh-so-easy, we highly recommend sewing your long-sleeve tops from single cotton jersey fabric. Contrary to popular opinion, these wardrobe basics don’t have to be boring, either.
If you’re on the hunt for indie sewing patterns, check out the Terry Long Sleeve Top by Viki Sews. A unique cut-out section at the top of the bust lends a flirtatious, edgy feel to the design that makes this anything but a run-of-the-mill basic. Paired with the slim-fit silhouette and extra extended sleeves, it’s a top fit for a modern gal who’s ready to rock.
4. Dresses Fit For a Queen
Slay, Queen! – in a single cotton jersey fabric dress. Some sewists avoid sewing dresses from jersey because they think it’ll lead to a boxy, shapeless fit, but they *literally* couldn’t be more wrong. As proved by the Kielo Dress sewing pattern from Named, you can sew dresses that are chic, elegant, and fitted whilst still living up to that cotton comfort.
With or without sleeves, the Kielo Dress can be dressed up or down depending on your fabric and accessories. A tie-up waist lets you adjust the fit to suit your figure, showing your curves off to the max and creating a gorgeous silhouette that’s divinely feminine. Did we mention that you can make a jumpsuit from this pattern, too? We love a 2-in-1!
5. Comfy and Sexy Undies
Single cotton jersey fabric makes the BEST underwear, no exaggeration. Breathable and light, it’s perfect for that kind of barely-there feel whilst still making you feel gorgeous.
If you’re convinced, check out the Josie Pattern from Made My Wardrobe and choose from plenty of pattern variations to create your own bra and knicker sets. Beginner-friendly, it’s a great project to kick-start your cotton jersey sewing journey.
6. Cosy PJs
PJs should be some of the comfiest, cosiest garments in your wardrobe, right? That’s why we always opt for single cotton jersey to sew ours, creating pyjamas with plenty of stretch that we can snuggle up in.
There are lots of indie sewing patterns that can be made into pyjamas, too, from an oversized boyfriend-fit t-shirt to a cuddly onesie, so the world’s your oyster. Even slip dresses can be made into PJs when you opt for single cotton jersey fabric. Get your forty-winks in comfort with a fabric that’s almost unbeatably comfortable.
7. Little Clothes for Little Ones
You can make almost an entire wardrobe of children’s clothes from single cotton jersey. With that little bit of stretch and plenty of durability, it’s the ideal fabric for even the most adventurous of little ones. When you’re back from a day of exploring, pop the clothes in the wash without worrying about shrinkage and keep plastic-based materials away from your child’s skin.
For children’s clothing sewing patterns, we love Lowland Kids. Pair their sewing patterns with our sustainable single cotton jersey fabric for a match that’s perfect on more than just paper.
