Shopping for fabric online is undeniably convenient, but it can also be a little tricky.
Even if you’re a seasoned sewist, knowing the exact shade and texture of the fabrics you’re browsing is almost impossible. This isn’t a task that’s helped by names, either. What one store describes as ‘Unicorn shimmers with a sunshine twist’, another names ‘Ice cream daydreams in a heatwave’ – and what do either of those even mean?!
Sometimes, heading to our fabric store in Wimbledon, London, is the only way to really get a grasp on what you’re buying. From colours to textures, and even testing whether a fabric is squat-proof (gym girlies know), the tactile experience of shopping for fabrics in person can’t be beaten.
If you fancy a day of fabric shopping in South West London, come and visit the Good Fabric studio! You could even combine your trip with the world-famous Wimbledon tennis tournament in June and get inspired by court-side fashion. We’ve got all the details to help you find us and prepare for your trip in this guide.
First Things First: Book Your Appointment
Our fabric store in Wimbledon, London, is available by appointment only. This is simply so that we can make sure we are around to say hello and chat about all things fabric-related. By taking appointments, you’ll also have the entire studio to yourself, giving you plenty of space to browse, pull out fabrics, and ask lots of questions. It’s like a sewist’s spa day!
As a working parent, we are bound by school hours. Appointments are typically available between 10:30 and 13:30, Monday to Saturday. If Sunday is the only day you can visit, though, it’s worth asking if we’re available just in case we can accommodate your appointment.

About Mainyard Studios
Mainyard Studios is a lively, bustling hub of creative businesses. Good Fabric isn’t set up in a traditional shop but in a collaborative studio space full of musicians, graphic designers, hair salons, fashion designers and even the odd pattern maker. It’s an inspiring spot, to say the least.
We mention this just so you’re not surprised when you pop into our fabric studio. We might not have a traditional shop-front, but we do have tons of natural light so that you can see the fabrics you’re browsing, a huge floor-length mirror, and an endless supply of tea, coffee and biscuits.
Come down and say hello!
What to Bring to Our Wimbledon Fabric Shop
Planning a visit to the Good Fabric store? To help you make the most of your appointment, we recommend you bring:
- Measurements: If you have a sewing project in mind, make a note of the fabric lengths you’ll need before heading over. We also have tape measures handy if you need to double-check.
- Sewing patterns: Shopping for a specific sewing pattern? Bring it along. Having your pattern on hand will keep the garment fresh in your mind and also make it easier for us to help you find the perfect sustainable fabric choice.
- Colour swatches: Bring any relevant swatches to inspire your colour, texture, pattern or fibre choice. Again, these are super useful when selecting matching fabrics.
- Inspiration images or mood boards: The more inspiration you have, the better. These can be images, magazines, patterns, or even a whole Pinterest board. Visual inspiration will help guide your choice and keep your mind focused on your creative vision.
