At Good Fabric, we’re all about autumnal sewing. We love this falling leaves, Bon Iver, pumpkin-spiced latte time of year affectionately known as sweater weather season; it’s the perfect time for lighting a candle and sewing up some cosiness. Just hand us a brushed sweater fabric or fluffy fleece and we’ll be happy until Christmas!
If you relate to our autumnal vibe, we’ve got a whole library of sweater sewing patterns ready to share with you. From snuggling up on a woodland walk to romanticising cold weather in your favourite cafe, these jumpers sewing patterns will see you through the season in style and bring a little something different to your winter wardrobe.
But, before we begin, an obligatory note on fabrics (of course!).
Before picking up your sewing scissors, you need to think about stretch.
There’s a time to throw out the rule book and get creative when sewing, but this isn’t it. We highly recommend sticking to the suggested stretch percentage when sewing jumpers. If you don’t, you might finish your project only to find you can’t quite stretch the neck over your head – not ideal.
For turtlenecks in particular you’ll need a sweater fabric with a little extra stretch. We recommend a Bamboo or Tencel Jersey, or even a 2×1 Rib Knit if you want to play around with texture.
If you’re sewing cardigans, jumpers, and hoodies, you do have more choice in terms of fabric (as long as it suits stretch recommendations). We love a Brushed Sweatshirt Knit for a 90s sporty vibe, or a Sherpa Fleece for that level of sweater weather cosy that you just can’t beat. There’s also the lovely, soft French Terry, which is perfect for easy sewing and laid-back loungewear.

The Troyer Nela is one of our go-to fleece sewing patterns that combines a snuggly funnel neck with a rubber cord around the hem for a fitted, cosy silhouette. Choose from either a regular or cropped length depending on just how cold it is, and pair with jeans and a pair of wellies for the perfect walking outfit.
Who said sweaters had to be boring? It definitely wasn’t Fibre Mood. With the Soraya Sweater sewing pattern, you can play around with length and enjoy the simplicity of a simple hemmed sleeve, before jazzing up the jumper with ruching and ribbons. A high turtleneck adds a touch of Parisian chic for a little added flair.
The Jarrah Sweater gives you plenty of pattern options for a look that’s tailored to your autumn wardrobe. The loose fit, drop-shoulder style oozes effortless glamour, with options for two necklines, two sleeves options, and a whopping four hem styles. Dress her up for a night on the town with a cute waist tie, or stick to a relaxed fit for at-home movie nights.
The Marlo cardigan Pattern is giving us cottagecore, folklore vibes, and we’re here for it. In a boyfriend fit with a deep V-neck, it’s perfect for throwing on for a countryside walk or a chai latte at your local cafe. Treat this pattern in the way it deserves by finishing it with some beautiful buttons (we particularly love these Chai Latte Resin Buttons).
Every sewist needs a staple turtleneck in their Sweater Weather wardrobe, and we’ve found the perfect choice. The Paola Turtleneck jumper sewing pattern is a simple, fitted long-sleeve top with a fold-over turtleneck, ideal for keeping those winter winds at bay. It’s also super simple to sew, making it perfect for our beginner sewists.
The Elaine Sweater is all about clean lines and hidden seams (aside from the lovely contoured darts running up the sleeves), making it a dream for minimalists. Thinking of layering? The V keyhole neckline and slightly shorter sleeves make it ideal for pairing with a chic shirt. Just be sure to stock up on Ribbing fabric for that lovely hem band before you start sewing
Birgitta Helmersson has an innovative range of ‘waste-free’ sewing patterns, including their wonderfully relaxed Zero Waste Jumper. An oversized fit, curved hem, and slim sleeve give this a loungewear vibe that we love, and the complimentary tips and video tutorial make it a great intro for this new way of sewing. Find the Birgitta Helmersson book in our Christmas Gift Guide.
The Basic Slipover might be sleeveless, but it’s still perfect for sewing in a thick jumper fabric. Besides, it’s all about layering up for sweater weather, right? Pair with a long-sleeve tee for the perfect level of warmth on autumnal days and nail that effortlessly cool look. This is a great sewing project for beginners, too, and comes with a handy video tutorial.
If you’ve bought a pair of ballet flats this year, we have the perfect sweater sewing pattern to pair them with. The Coppélia Cardi is a neat, elegant wrap cardi with a raglan sleeve. The tie around the waist is completely adjustable so that you can create the silhouette you want, and we love the look of the thick, clean hems. She’s a cutie!
Get yourself a two-in-one jumper pattern this year with the relaxed and comfortable Billie Sweatshirt and Dress by Tilly and the Buttons. With options for a standard sweater (a wardrobe staple) and a laid-back jumper dress, it’s best for our sewists who love lots of clothing options. Switch up your looks, too, with options for straight or balloon sleeves, different sleeve lengths, and cutaway pockets.
Stay cute this A/W season with Seamwork’s totally on-trend Sable Cardigan. Featuring three cutie-pie tie closures down the centre front, and a scoop neck that shows off your decolletage, this isn’t your standard cardigan! We love the idea of using ribbons as ties for the ultimate girly look and pairing with a long-sleeved tee for easy layering.
Sporty, stylish, and sleek, this is giving Kim K meets Charli XCX. The Jerry Jacket is an uber-cool hoodie with a straight silhouette, loose-fitting sleeves finished with a ribbed cuff, and a semi-fitted hood. Patch pockets and a zipper provide the finishing touches, and we’d pair with shades and an attitude for the coolest look of the season.
If there’s anything we’ve proved with this collection of jumper sewing patterns, it’s that dressing up for cold weather doesn’t have to mean chucking on the same chunky knit and jeans. You can layer up sweater vests or go cute in cardis, and an oversized jumper or two never goes amiss in your winter wardrobe.
