Girlies, it’s time to get all dressed up – the festive season is here 🎄
At Good Fabric, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t have quite a few dresses that can be dressed up or down. But, every now and then – as the nights grow darker, the trees go up, and we start craving mince pies – it’s time to sew up something special.
Who doesn’t want a dress that’s just a little bit extra for Christmas?
Having said that, we’re also on a mission to create less wasteful wardrobes. That’s why we’ve been sure to pick sewing patterns that are perfect for special occasions all year long, because a dress is never just for Christmas.
But the clock’s ticking, Good Fabric sewists! The festive season is already upon us, so let’s jump straight into our fabric recommendations and fave party dress sewing patterns.
The festive season is notorious for glitter and sequins. While we love a bit of sparkle, these really aren’t great choices for the planet, and unless you’re repurposing old fabrics or buying second-hand offcuts, we’d steer clear. But, that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style.
Instead, we’re focusing on fabrics that have a wonderful drape and movement. Our go-to choices party dress sewing patterns for are Ecovero, Tencel, and Viscose. We also have an amazing selection of glossy Twill in Gold, Silver, and Black that are perfect for the party season.
If you’re after a knit fabric, you can’t go wrong with Organic Cotton Velour, which adds a little bit of sheen, a little bit of glam, and plenty of party to your dress.

Missing that festive sparkle? There’s an eco-friendly way to jazz up your party dress, and it all begins with a button. We have a wide selection of festive buttons this year from Eglantine et Zoe, including these very Christmasy Burgundy Buttons and girly Rose Pink Buttons. The Scarlett Dress is the perfect accompaniment to an evening of mulled wine and classical carols for our classy Christmas sewists. A long-length, A-line silhouette with flared sleeves, it’s a timeless look that you need in your special occasion wardrobe.
Give your party dress a pop of excitement by choosing a contrasting fabric for the waist panels.
For our party gals, you’ll love the Chloe Dress sewing pattern with its bow-effect bust, form-fitting silhouette, and optional side slit.
Choose between a mini or midi length depending on your style, and pair with your favourite heels for a winning party look.
We’re having visions of this dress in a Red Cotton Velour - oh la la!
The Sicily Slip party dress sewing pattern is one of our favourite choices for events throughout the year. Cut on the bias, it has a wonderful drape and a romantic, floaty hemline.
Make this dress your own by choosing your strap widths, neckline, and dress length for a versatile piece that’ll take you from the festive season to summer with ease.
Christmas is the time to add a little magic to your wardrobe, and the Scarlett Maxi Dress is ticking all the boxes.
It incorporates six godets for a statement-flared hem, which comes to life when you choose contrasting fabrics - is it just us getting ballerina vibes? The top is seamlessly fitted and the whole look is just perfection - *chef’s kiss*.
We love to reduce wardrobe waste, which is why the Sienna Dress makes us so very, very happy!
We’d typically say this is a summer piece, but the relaxed fit and wide straps make it easy-peasy to layer, so you can add a long-sleeve turtleneck underneath or pop a knitted jumper over the top for laid-back party glam. (P.S. - it also has pockets!!)
The Aalto dress sewing pattern can be made into a very glamorous, full-length dress or a super cute top, depending on your vibe this festive season.
With a loose-fitting silhouette and the option for either a low, scooped back or a girly bow, it’s a unique look that’s bound to turn heads for all the right reasons.
Prefer a more fitted silhouette? Use a belt or ribbon to pull the waist in - et voila!
Flutter sleeves, a fitted bodice, and the twirliest skirt we ever did see; she’s a real-life princess! The Sandeep Dress is an ultra-girly look that can be sewn either as a short-sleeved dress or a skirt, giving you plenty of wardrobe options.
The multi-tiered skirt is perfect for a little NYE boogie, and we can see this being easily dressed up or down throughout the year.
If we were going to pick one pattern to sum up the party dress look, it’d be the Estella Dress. It’s girly, glamorous, and has a beautiful silhouette that’ll make you feel like a million dollars.
In terms of details, you’re looking at a close-fitting bodice, accentuated waist, inverted pleats, set-in sleeves, and princess seams, so it’s not a sewing project for the faint-hearted.
The No.1174 Dress sewing pattern is a chic statement piece that’ll add plenty of life to your special occasion wardrobe. A fitted waist is contrasted with dropped shoulders, wide sleeves, and a structured skirt, while the round neckline softens the look.
We love the styling by Grasser on this one; you can’t go wrong with a pair of black tights and some fierce knee-high boots.
She’s classic, she’s romantic, and she’s oh-so-beautiful. The Grace Party Dress sewing pattern has it all!
We simply adore the shoulder bow ties, which flow perfectly into the square neckline and fitted bodice. A higher waistline elongates the legs, so it’ll look a dream on both shorter and taller sewists.
There’s also a handy video tutorial you can follow for an easier sew.
Whether you’re having a night on the town or going on a festive date, dress to impress in the Tia Dress. A classic, long-sleeve bodycon, this is a wardrobe staple that you’ll be reaching for throughout the year.
The gathered front adds a little flair, and you can’t go wrong with a pair of chunky black books and your favourite layered jewellery.
Okay, so this is one of our favourite party dress sewing patterns of the year.
The Vogue Dress is certainly worthy of its name! A fit and flare silhouette is complemented by gorgeous shaping thanks to bust darts, and three elegant bows framing the V-neckline. Opt for long or short sleeves and adjust the hemline length depending on your ideal party dress look.
There aren’t many sleeps left until Christmas is here, so we’ll keep this brief! After finding your perfect party dress sewing pattern, stay snuggled up over the holidays with our favourite Sweater Sewing Patterns and Cosy Pyjamas.
