Self Assembly Required Guest Blog

by Emily

Hello! I’m Emily from the Self Assembly Required blog! I was asked by Polina of Good Fabric if I’d like to guest post on her blog and try out some of her gorgeous sustainable fabric and I couldn’t resist!

Buying sustainably isn’t always the easy choice. It can be difficult to find and certify, many fabrics come with rather murky backgrounds and it’s often impossible to know where it’s come from. Good Fabric has taken out all the hassle and put lots of certified eco-friendly sustainably sourced fabrics in one place! All eco fabrics and trims come with green credentials such as GOTS, OEKO-TEX, SGS, TENCEL or ECOVERO.

I chose to use the Sweet Flowers woven OEKO-TEX viscose fabric made by Atelier Jupe in the dark green. Dark green is totally my colour of choice for this fall season and I knew the soft draping fabric would make for a great transitional dress!

I opted to use a hack of a tried and tested pattern – the Mira dress from Fibre Mood magazine. Coincidentally both the magazine and the fabric originate in Belgium! Serendipity I think!

I wanted to make a dress suitable for the coming Autumn/ Winter (in other words something that looked good with boots!) and chose to make this version of the Mira a midi length with ¾ puffed sleeves. I kept the skirt in two tiers and made the upper tier 20cm longer to get the length I wanted. In an ideal world, I would have made it with three shorter but equal tiers but I’d forgotten just quite how much fabric that involves and I had definitely come up a little short. It was no big deal though and I made sure to maximise on the yardage I did have!

It’s yet another version of this pattern that I’m in love with (if you want to see the extent of my love affair with this pattern, check out my Self Assembly Required blog and I’m sure it won’t be the last!

I strongly believe in shopping sustainably when we can, though I know it’s not always the easy choice or even an option for us whether that’s due to availability or expense. I love that companies like Good Fabric are out there striving to make the process as easy and accessible for us as possible.
