Sorona is a partially plant-based polymer by DuPont that is an eco friendly substitute for spandex.
Dressmaking fabrics made with Sorona have lovely stretch without any elastane and are very soft & supple. In addition, Sorona fabrics are lightweight & breathable, moisture wicking & quick drying, wrinkle & fade resistant.
As Sorona is a polymer, it is blended with natural fibers such as cotton, linen or viscose, sometimes all 3 of them at the same time. Depending on the fiber composition, you can use this fabric to sew for all seasons, from summer skirts and shorts, to cosy autumnal shakets and spring blazers. It is very unusual fabric so we highly recommend ordering samples so you can get a better idea of what it feels like.
To get little bit more technical, Sorona is 37% plant based, using 30% less energy and emitting 50% less GHG (greenhouse gas) as compared to the production of nylon from non-renewable resources.
